Guilty Secrets

I’m a Gleek.

I watched the pilot probably a few months ago now, just because it was on the telly. And whilst I didn’t immediately leap to it and say it was brilliant, I didn’t dislike it in the same way as a lot of American programmes.

But, a bit later, I knew a lot of people were talking about it, so gave it a second chance.

And now I can’t get enough of it.

Take this clip, from the same said pilot. It’s a great cover of a great tune.

The entire show is feelgood, and the music is well sung. The characters are actually characters and not 2-dimensional droids, especially my favourite demonic PE teacher Sue Sylvester ably portrayed by Jane Lynch.

It got a brilliant review on the Radio Times website for the same reasons that I like it.

I love Glee because it's proper escapism; you can switch on and get lost in happiness before emerging, blinking, into the light, realising you've just passed an hour watching a piece of TV fiction that didn't send you spinning into existential despair. And if it makes you want to wear glitter eyeshadow, then what's wrong with that?

Unsung: The Kid Jones

It’s been a long time since Unsung had made a feature, but about as long since The Kid Jones first sent me an e-mail saying hello.

Now I can definitely talk about them though as their first single Juliet is out next Monday. It’s a good catchy number with electronic roots and a chorus that we can all sing. I particularly like the random dreamy bit about two-thirds through… A nice twist on the usual generic indie stuff.

The other songs on the standard myspace listing are also pretty good. Greenlight is the slow and moody guitar one, Mario Sings is the rockier one.

Listening whilst doing other things, it’s proved to be brilliant background music. And, I imagine they’d be a great live band. I might not, just yet, buy any album – but I’ll listen to them again, which is a good thing after a first listen only.

TOTW9: Johnny Cash – For the Good Times

This might be the first ever posthumous TOTW. But, such a brilliant singer, it’s not surprising. Is it going to worth finding time to go to HMV to buy American VI: Ain’t No Grave? Definitely.

Sadly, I can’t find any version of this track available online, even non-embeddable. The BBC can offer a sneak preview, but that’s it.

Instead, I’ll offer you another of his truly emotive covers. Hurt was originally done by Nine Inch Nails, and recorded with this Grammy award winning video in 2003 immediately before Cash’s death.

A decent shortlist this week:

Biffy Clyro – Many of Horror (When we collide) (18 Jan) – Classic Indie guitar based rock.

Timothy B Schmit – Parachute – It sounds like the Eagles, which is no great surprise because he’s still in the band – but you’d hope that the solo output would have something to give it that individuality. Good song, but maybe a bit stuck in the past.

Ocean Colour Scene – Magic Carpet Days (26 Jan) – still waiting for a video for this one, but it’s a nice return – bouncy, enthusiastic, good fun.

But the winner is…

Owl City – Fireflies (8 Jan) – for a song that was originally recorded in the eons, it still sounds very fresh. Which is why it came out of nowhere to be US number 1 at the tail end of last year. Nominated for the Beeb’s Sound of 2010, I suppose the risk is that they were only a flash in the plan. But, all I need to do is take each song on its own.

Don’t stop the music (25 Jan) by Jamie Cullum is almost certaintly the best cover I’ve heard in years. It’s quirky and a totally different twist.

But One Republic actually take TOTW with All the right moves (11 Jan). It’s got that catchy repetitive hook, a slightly haunting vocal melody.

Muse: The Resistance

How long have Muse been around for now? The short answer is well over a decade, so I’m quite ashamed to come to them late. Hearing a song on the radio I’ve often enjoyed it, but only appreciated them as a band since V2008.

As a result, this is the first album I’ve bought of theirs, and have been anything but disappointed. It’s imposing, and powerful. Much has been said about the 3-part Exogenesis that concludes the album – and I can only agree. It’s described as a symphony, and it can be very moving.

Personal highlight is probably the title track, with its eyrie opening and full-on chorus. I’m a bit bewildered by the heavy Queen influence on United States of Eurasia that I spotted as soon as listened to it, and am not the only one. MK Ultra also seems to start with the theme to Treasure Hunt.

There’s little to say against this album. One of those rare beasts with not a single dud track – even in comparison they’re all as strong as each other, and also very different – whilst keeping the essential sense of assembly. It’s easy to listen from start to finish again, and again, which is obvious the true test.

Arctic Monkeys: Humbug

Once again, I’m behind with album reviews. I’ve had this album for months, which is no great shock given how much I like the group.

It’s good that I like the Arctic Monkeys though, because it is more of the same. All fairly dark, guitar heavy, and with very distinct vocals.

There’s a few expections to that norm, so accurately demonstrated in tracks like My Propellor. Secret Door is, for instance, is quite melancholy and dreamy. Second single Cornerstone is also very different, fairly simplistic, and calms down the pace of the album very much.

Personal pick – Pretty Visitors. The variation within itself is pretty good – crazy fast paced opening, before an anthemic chorus.

It’s not a hugely different album, but more of a progression. Which is good, when there’s no need to be daring. The lyrics and song writing remain excellent, and it makes it clear that there’s more good stuff to come.

What makes me think it sound quite classic is the fairly simple verses, simple accompaniment, and then the chorus finally comes in with a real power and a decent riff. It's fairly dark, but so's the weather at the minute so it matches!

Sound of 2009 - Reviewed

At the tail end of 2008, the entire 'Bites team went through the BBC's "Sound of 2009" long list and cast our thoughts on the offerings. Let's see how close we got to the answer shall we?

The Big Pink
Has it been a successful year or not? Dominos still is heard on occasion, got into the top 30 and is a good song - but have they made it into the public conciousness beyond a bit of niche for the other music?
Florence and the Machine
Yeah, she's better known now - still as popular, still as talented.
Little Boots
Won the Beeb's poll, and surely everyone now knows the tune to Remedy. Good result.
The Temper Trap
See later and the Empire of the Sun, just on a more pronounced scale. Big in their native Australia - top 10 album. Less so here, album peaked at 26 but the singles were nowhere.
Mumford & Sons
I asked for more, have now seen them live, and picked the single. Didn't get to the BBC's top 10 - but I do believe that they made a mistake here, and I think they're now much better known.
Frankmusik
I think an average year - some decent chart success, and some recognition by yours truly. But only some, and I'm worried it may end up just being a flash in a pan instead of a long-term talent, because it's not bad.
La Roux
Only fifth in the BBC poll, but a huge success story and now very well know. I think Stig got it right when he said that the music was catchy and different, and that's why the singles have gone into the top end of the chart and stayed there.
Empire of the Sun
"Not enough to make it big." I said. BBC differed by putting the Australian band 4th, their home crowd differed even more by giving them 4 Aria Awards. Top 10 single with Walking on a Dream, and I've grown to like them. I don't think we've seen the end of them in Blighty yet, by far.
Kid Cudi
"He could become big - supporting Kanye West is a good start, and I've heard of West. But, even if he did, I wouldn't notice."
I haven't noticed him. Have you?
Passion Pit
It's taken up to Little Secrets to get some attention, but we're there eventually. Maybe an honourary mention in Sound of 2010 could be more appropriate?
White Lies
I said that they'd go from strength to strength in the New Year, and with a number 1 album that was proved. I've picked them on TOTW, but, haven't heard anything from them in a while. Which is a shame, because they are pretty good.
VV Brown
A dissapointment in the public gaze I think. I still like her, there's plenty of critical acclaim - but an album only getting to number 30 does not "Sound of the year" make.
Lady GaGa
Re-reading what I said last year, and describing her as "not my cup of tea", I don't know if I stand by that or not. I do like Lady GaGa now. She's certainly popular, and made it big. But, she has never made it to the dizziest heights in the music industry as one of my TOTWs. I do sometimes think that her music is a bit garish (or is that just her dresses). And, several singles on this year, I'm beginning to wonder if we're stuck in the loop. I can't be as harsh as I was last year, the music is enjoyable, but I think it still isn't my main music of choice.

Dan Black
Dan Black was really starting to get a name for himself this time last year. But, he seems to have vanished, the debut album came out without much ceremony and I completed missed it. Where's he gone?

This year, I’m not going to do a Top 10 per-se, just a general shortlist.

Fleet Foxes – Mykonos (TOTW2)

Take That – Up All night (TOTW11)

Noisettes – Don’t upset the Rhythm (TOTW15)

Killers – World We Live in (TOTW22)

Florence & The Machine – Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) (TOTW27)

Paolo Nutini – Pencil full of lead (TOTW44)

Hockey – Song Away (September Last Chance)

I’ve slightly surprised myself with this list.

I mean, come on, Take That? The thing is, their comeback has been full of really good pop songs. I don’t think they can really be classed as a boy-band any more, I whilst Gary Barlow has been accepted as a brilliant songwriter for years, he’s really demonstrating it here.

No Arctic Monkeys despite buying the album (yes, I still need to review that…) and having 2 TOTWs. Likewise repeat mentions by La Roux, Lily Allen, or the Yeah Yous managed to get onto the shortlist – but the latter did come very close.

It does say something about the year that there is such a pop-contingent in the TOTWs. The other big things have been come backs and “classic” artists (see Mark Knofler, Michael Bolton, Lionel Richie), and classically-based songs. Take Pencil full of lead – it’s American dance hall music. All of the Noisettes have had that slight 60s funk too.

At the end of the year though, I’m not actually that surprised by my TOTY choice. What I am surprised at is that they’ve only had one TOTW hit, although other mentions have been there. The album is predictably sensational, and I’ve been harking on about the artist to anyone that’ll listen for well over the past twelve months. I’ve looked at the songs objectively, and still can think that my favourite emerging artist of the past few years has produced my favourite song of the year.

It’s very different, and slightly quirky (especially with the video). It’s memorable, and one I could listen to again and again. Ladies, Gents, and other bloggers I present my Tune of the Year 2010 – Florence and the Machine.

Well, there’s only two more TOTWs to go this year (including this one).

In the last years I’ve been doing this, by this time I’ve already had a good idea what’s going to be in the running for Tune of the Year. For TOTY2009, I’m not so sure. I might actually to have to think about it after Christmas.

This week isn’t much better. The big news in the music world this week is who’s going to be Christmas #1 later today – A Miley Cyrus cover (who’d have thought we’d be saying that already) or a 17-year old tune? As a long standing loather of any of these ‘talent’ shows, I think it’s a great idea. But I’m not buying either, because Christmas shouldn’t be about either, it should be about a dodgy festive number (see Peter Kay last year, perhaps the best attempt recently). Anyway, I’m not going off on one, when occasional contributor Hazard has already been there.

Once again, I’m afraid to admit that I’ve let my inbox grow too full of unread e-mails from bands, promo companies, etc etc – so what better way to spend a Sunday morning than writing Christmas cards and listening to them? Here’s some of the picks…

Dirty Strangers

You might not recognise the name, but you’ll recognise the style of music. And you’ll certainly spot some of the names in “guest performers”, a certain Keith Richards also writing some of the tracks. In that respect, it’s entirely what you’d expect, a slightly modern Rolling Stones. They’ve been going since the last 80s, but the music is still popular (and will be for ages), so it’s a tried and trusted format! Have a listen to Bad Girls, with Richards.

Dionne Bromfield

Amy Winehouse’s god daughter and on her “Lioness” record label, Amy herself summarises her protégé:

"The first time I heard Dionne sing, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Such an amazing voice from such a young girl. I'm just so proud of her. I'm very lucky to have a record label. I've got all these people that I love, that are really talented - and Dionne is my number one."

Most of the songs on her myspace are covers of classic Motown numbers, which isn’t a bad thing when they’re sung this well. There’s only clips I’m afraid, but there’s enough to make me want to hear more – which is a nice tease.

Damn Vandals

These four graffiti artists have traded in their ASBOs for rock 'n' roll.

The band met on an internet graffiti forum and together decided to paint "Destroy Mondays" eight foot high on the side of a commuter train parked up near Catford.
It was 2007.
Rumbled by a police sting operation they got 500 hours community service. Their punishment was to re-decorate the local youth club.
After hours one night they stumbled on a room containing guitars and a drum kit.

The rest is soon to be history.

Not bad for a gang of convicts, it has to be said. I think that Tsunami High is a bit Bowie-esque, which is a nice twist on a standard indie-rock selection.

TOTW50: Passion Pit – Little Secrets

George Michael – December Song – The best word to describe this song is ‘hopeful’. It’s not the bouncy, party Christmas song – it’s a very melancholy number, but the video has a happy ending. The real meaning of Christmas perhaps – not just the boozing and the naff presents, but family.

Dionne Broomfield ft. Zalon – Ain’t no mountain high enough – As you’ll see in a few days, I’m quite impressed by this new singer on Amy Winehouse’s new label. This is now on the radio playlists, and whilst it’s a cover (and therefore not really original), it’s still a cracking song and very well sung.

Pet Shop Boys – All over the world – Can’t be a beat of classical sampling can you? More than a slight nod to the Nutcracker suite – which is only to be expected, it coming from their “Christmas” album

Aled Jones & Sir Terry Wogan – Silver Bells – Two good reasons for mentioning this. Firstly, I have to mention the final week of Wake up to Wogan in one blog or the other. Secondly, it’s for charity – therefore there’s no excuse not to support it. Not sure about the Rupert Bear scarf though Tel?

Passion Pit – Little Secrets – Well, I couldn’t go for a Christmassy TOTW just yet. It’s fresh and unusual. It’s eccentric, and it’s fun.

The big development this week is that imeem has been integrated into myspace, so the playlist functionality has had to change.

Not helped by the fact that I can’t find some of these songs on myspace – although given that the second biggest song in 1986 was Mr Nick “Heartbeat” Berry, perhaps it’s not a major surprise.

As a result, I’m trying a video playlist this week. Perhaps you’d have rather I missed number 2 and 4 in the list though…

In Concert: Paul Weller

Carlisle Sands Centre – December 3rd 2009

For once, the support band only warrants a passing mention. Twisted Wheel were all well and good, but they’re no Paul Weller.

For the once time at the Sands Centre, I was able to forget that the venue is actually a sports hall for most of the year.

The atmosphere was nothing short of incredible. Which I suppose is only reasonable to expect from such a legendary artist. The Jam, the Style Council, and a solo career still going today – the set contained everything new and old.

Weller even seemingly apologised for some of the ‘new’. “It’s difficult hearing some things for the first time,” he said about one track “but it’s a good one”. And, even if someone in the packed auditorium wasn’t overly impressed, I’m sure it was made up for with classics like You do something to me, Shout to the top, and a final encore of Town Called Malice.

What was particularly impressive was, in hearing so much of his work in one place at one time, was how varied it can be. From quiet acoustic numbers through to loud mosh-pit enducing choruses – all were there. All were sung with passion, enthusiasm, and power.

To say “he’s still got it” is a cliche – but it’s true. And it’s great to see that people of Weller’s repute are still gigging, still putting their all into it, and still appearing to have fun along the way.

In Concert: The Automatic

What’s that coming over the hill?

It’s a brand new album from everyone’s favourite Welsh indie-rockers, the Automatic. After the huge success of debut album “Not accepted anywhere” in 2006, “This is a fix” was a difficult 2nd album in 2008 not getting to the top 40. However, “Tear the Signs Down” is going to be their first album on their own label – out next February – and they’re now off promoting it in advance together with the new single Interstate (out 6 December).

Support came from Straight Lines, another Welsh group with their debut album coming out early next year. It was a classic warm-up performance – loud, raucous, and infectious. There wasn’t a bad song in the set, particular favourites being the slightly twisted tune in All my friends have joined the army and the complete power of To be honest. The first album could well be one to look forward to.

Back to the headliners then, it was a nice mix of nice and old. Starting with Steve McQueen and featuring, of course, Monster, there were the songs that everyone was able to sing along to. Paul Mullen joined the band around the time of the second album, and I think it’s clear to tell that he’s got his feet more under the table (as it were) – taking the vocals on more of the new songs, and giving a subtly different feel to the music.

It’s like the band have grown up in a way, and was a very hopeful indication that the new album will be good fun.

TOTW48: Mumford & Sons – Winter Winds

The song that’s actually going round my head, the song that I actually want to make TOTW is one I heard a couple of times on one night out, and one that it one of the greatest soft-rock songs ever (possible even better than Kip Winger).

Unfortunately, I don’t really think that I can make Journey a highlight from the cutting edge of music, so instead here’s the latest from the band making folk-style music cool again.

It’s a cracking simple tune, with close-knit harmonies, wide instrumentation, and once again shows broad talents. It probably is better than Journey in any event.

TOTW45: Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone

This video is either, depending on your view, very original and quite witty; or bloody boring. I’m still undecided. It’s directed by Richard Ayoyade out-of-off-of the IT Crowd, so it’s clearly meant to be funny, and there’s some funny bits – but it could do with a bit of, you know, something.

Still, music is not about how it looks, otherwise John & Edward would have been crowned ~~Extractor~~ X-Factor champions long ago – it’s about the song and the singing. Written about “meeting girls in pubs who remind [Alex Turner] of the one he’s trying to forget” (Uncut magazine), the lyrics manage the first rhyme of toast and ghost since Des’Ree without it sounding even half as cheesy. It’s a soft song, and it paints a story which a lot of songs don’t do.

Let us, together, spare a thought for some rabbits and the biggest selling single of 1979.

To be fair though, it is an exceptionally written song by Mike Batt (much better than the Wombles) - which bewilderingly never got to America's Billboard Top 100.

Also featuring is one of Bob Geldolf's hits (not the one about Rats, but the other one) and a bit of Cliff. Not a bad year all in all though.

This week's tune is, quite possibly, one of the best uses of sampling I've heard in years. Taking Rip it Up from Orange Juice, and giving it a totally different twist - especially if you listen to the version with Chipmunk (whoever he is). I prefer the Radio 2 version, no shock there, just featuring the talented vocal of Beverley Knight. It's funky, passionate, and enjoyable.

Simple. Serene. Emotive. Obviously, I had not idea what the lyrics were referring to the first few times I heard this song, but notwithstanding that it's impossible not to be moved by it all. The song has actually been around for a while, and in the UK available for download since June, but physically released only on the 12th October. Amazing from someone who is said to be extremely shy, born blind and living without any modern aids that are available to him.

In Concert: The Proclaimers

The last time I was at The Sands Centre for a concert, I did point out that I didn't view it as a perfect venue. Last night for The Proclaimers, it was proved even more with the lights often coming on a split second too late and far too many episodes of feedback for professional concert.

Miles Hunt (out of off of the Wonderstuff) was support, and sadly not as inspiring as hoped. Most of the songs were nice, but nothing more. I commented at the time that it would be a great soundtrack to a film, but not as gig music. Thankfully, ending with Size of a cow ensured that things weren't a complete damp squib.

As towards the headliners, overall it was a really good set. Inevitably, a lot of the songs I didn't recognise, and got the feeling that I wasn't the only one. Never-the-less, Love can move mountains (which I'm sure must have been a TOTW shortlist when it was released recently, but can't find it) was a particular favourite, and proof that the twins still have the ability to write good tunes.

The last 30 minutes however were an absolutely brilliant finale. Sunshine on Leith in its live form is truly emotive, and the other old favourites like I'm on my way and (of course) I'm Gonna be (500 miles) really got the crowd going - and the two First Aiders in the pit (it's a wonder they ever let me out).

In concert: First Aid Kit & Fanfarlo

When I first mentioned Fanfarlo in TOTW, I said there was more to follow. Where it followed was up in Glasgow at the world famous King Tutts, as I've been missing decent gigs for a while.

Somewhat unusually, it was actually a joint-headline gig with former TOTWers First Aid Kit.

But first of all, as ever, was the support act. Woodenbox are a local band, as is de rigeur, and as support bands often are were really really impressive. I'm trying to remember where I've heard the name from in the past, but either way the set was dynamic, and creative. A truly live experience with what I would call 'proper' instruments (ie saxophone and trumpet, not just the standard guitar + drums). Some would say that purpose of warm-up acts is to, erm, warm-up the crowd - and they managed this perfectly, with the right amount of energy to get things going without wearing things out.

First Aid Kit then took over the baton with a complete change. Close-knit harmonies with limited accompaniment showed the true vocal talents of both Klara and Johanna. Stand out track for me was the emotive cover of Universal Soldier, which is even more moving in the live. Hard Believer is the new single out on Monday, and is definitely a bit more energetic and different - I personally loved the anticipatory modulation (Can you tell I did music at school?) of the line "Love is ro-ugh" that they sang on the stage. The one flaw with the band is that you really have to be in the right sort of mood to enjoy the music in any length - and they may not be, for me at least, an "album buy" when it's out in January - but as background music and to show the talent in a live band, you can't go far wrong.

Back to Fanfarlo then, and as instrument after instrument appeared on the stage it became obvious that the band were going to be a bit nearer to The Arcade Fire than I previously thought, to be proved as the music started. Harold T Wilkins proves the similarities - as does seeing the band in action. It almost proved to be a logistical nightmare as it seemed between every song there was a mass movement to get into the right position to play yet another different instrument. Several I still have no idea what they actually were. To some extent they managed a mixed set on their own - from the gentle simple openings to the fast paced Luna nothing seemed too much of a challenge to show the flair and talent.

I can't finish without commenting on the encore though, as First Aid Kit and Fanfarlo joined to perform This is the Way - first performed when the bands met up at the Field Day Festival. As it was really a joint headline, there's only one video I can finish wish - hope you enjoy at least as half as much as I enjoyed the diversity and flair that the gig as a whole had to offer.

One EskimO - One Eskimo

This is the review of a nice, average band; with a nice, average home in a nice, average town. At least, that's what I imagine it to be.

Because, as the introduction to Hometime tells us, that's the story behind "All Balloons", the provisional title for One EskimO's debut album which is now set to be a self-titled number.

I first talked about One EskimO back in June, and have been listening to the album fairly regularly since then general release having been sadly delayed on several occasions until now, finally, next Monday (available for pre-order at all usual places), together with the extra "Givin' Up". They really are my band of the moment - but a bit of further background first, courtesy of the review from one such "usual place":

One eskimO's striking sound and presentation can be traced back to 2004, when [singer/songwriter Kristian] Leontiou first hit the UK Top 10 with his solo debut single, 'Story Of My Life.' His album, entitled 'Some Day Soon,' proved equally successful, selling more than 200,000 copies and catapulting the soulful young singer to pop success. But, the experience left the gifted young vocalist strangely unfulfilled, as if he were merely a spoke in the great wheel of music industry marketing.

So, Leontiou set to do something different. And with Adam Falkner (drums), Pete Rinaldi (guitar) and Jamie Sefton (bass and horns) he set out to create a band that doesn't require him to be in the spotlight, the central instead being one eskimo (with a band of a penguin, giraffe, and monkey). As Leontiou told the Guardian back in 2007:

"I wanted to create a sound of my own: magical, ambient, filmic, acoustic, beautiful and meaningful. I wanted to write about how I felt about life, love, losses and failures, highs and lows, even heartbreaks. But also about how amazing human life is and how mind-blowing our very existence is."

And that's the definite mood behind the album. Moody and very lyrical, expressive and touching upon a huge variety of issues that affect daily life. The tracks themselves have got comparitively basic tunes and rhythms, but the intricate electronic textures took a year to finalise the album - with Rollo Armstrong producing.

With the perhaps rough and ready animation, the "childlike innocence" that Leontiou said he wanted to create is there.

Stand out tracks have to be Kandi (sampling Candi Staton's He called me baby), the powerful (without being loud, raucous, or heavy) Chocolate, and the jazz Balloons (3 quite different ones there) - but it's difficult to actually pick out any. There genuinely are no bad tracks, and there is much to be said from treating the album as a whole and not individual tracks.

I'm gutted I missed that at V, but you can still catch them supporting Paulo Nutini over the next few weeks. I'll be looking for their own gigs, which are an inevitability, and am determined not to miss them again.

August Last Chance: Black Eyed Peas

I'm going to break the rules here. My rule is that the last chance comes from the nominated tracks for TOTW that haven't quite made the grade.

However, I Gotta Feeling has only not made it to the shortlist because of desperate memory failings on my part. In fact, it definitely should have been a TOTW on its own. So, I'm making it my last chance with no sense of shame - and even if I did, what would you do about it?

It really is a brilliant pop song. Catchy, diverse, unique, funky, with real get-up - I'm sure I could go on for ages. It's just a feel good song, and could easily start a night out.

Rock festivals are all around at the moment, but no one seems to be releasing anything - so I thought I'd focus on the sophomore solo efforts of ladies who used to be in other bands.

The first is Frou Frou's Imogen Heap - as normal, thrown into fame and stardom by a vocal only effort called Hide and Seek appearing on US TV show of no real note, The OC.

She famously re-mortgaged her house to record her debut album, Speak For Yourself. She managed to land the lead song on the end credits of Disney's Narnia movie. She now releases another layered vocal effort as the first single off of her new album, Ellipse.

Imogen Heap - First Train Home

Runner up. Irish singer who won't let her accent be hidden, Dolores O'Riordan. Taking the odd approach of including one of the songs from her first solo album on her new album, No Baggage - albeit slightly revamped (in a - this song is good, you WILL hear it - style of hissy fit?). Dolores, former singer with the Cranberries - just does what she does best - as an album, it's more like the Cranberries than her first, you'd almost not notice the difference.

Debut single The Journey is probably the most individual track, it's fairly catchy - you can't sing along to it unless you're Irish though.

V-Blog: The other bits

Well, V finished almost exactly one week ago, and now I'm back from France I can tell you all about it. Except, as you might have guessed from the lack of numerous posts (to which I once again have to thank Hazard), what I warned could happen did happen and my view of any stages wasn't the greatest.

Still, of those bands on my "would like to see" list, whilst I didn't see that many I did catch the odd song from plenty - even if it was just hearing them from afar. The Noisettes were nice and racy; The Killers sounded as brilliant as I would have hoped; Mystery Jets were raucous; Athlete sounded pretty good.

The big shame is that, in not really watching one set in any great detail (save for the fabulous Specials), I can't really say who was brilliant - it really is a case of being one thing listening, and another seeing. To an extent, I can listen on the radio... It also means that (save for Dizzee Rascal) no-one struck me as being particularly crap (and I think Dizzee Rascal is mainly a question of personal taste as the crowd seemed to be loving it).

So, sadly not much to report on this blog - but it was still a cracking event and with any luck I'll be back once again next year.

Remi Nicole - Cupid Shoot Me

The second album from another soulful singer on the Island Label (vaguely familiar routine there then) is out on Monday - but what makes Remi Nicole stand out from what is becoming a very busy genre (particularly with stablemate Amy Winehouse)?

Well, all 11 tracks on the album have been written by Ms Nicole, and when I first listened to a quick sample of the album I was quite dissapointed. They lacked the certain "oopmh" and really catchy chorus of Standing Tears Apart (the first single, out now). Thankfully, it was a grower - I think what the problem was the initial shock of such a varied range of sounds in a short time frame. In retrospect though, it shows great variety and creativity from a young singer-songwriter.

Cupid Shoot Me, the title track, is especially soulful and perhaps a bit 60s with the chorus (Happy Days anyone?). Nice Boy is guitar lead and "shoo-woddy" - with a wonderful catchy beat. Whereas Come Find Me is the slow and melancholy one that every album has. And, if anything, Love You so is somewhere towards Rockabilly!

Thankfully, after getting used to all the differences, I'm able to say that yes, they are all good tracks. The diversity does actually mean that you won't get bored from the album - and with a wonderful voice, harmonies, and memorable tunes, there's nothing to get bored of in any event.

Unsung: Girls

If I said to you Lust for Life, the latest single by Girls wouldn't be what you had in mind. Mind you, from the band name, you wouldn't be expecting two San Franciscans called Christopher and "JR", would you? The first song I heard from the band was the wonderfully grumbling Hellhole Ratrace.

A bit like a non-Scottish Glasvegas, the song seems to drone on in a dreary fashion - which I appreciate sounds very negative but isn't meant to be, it's a character of the song. The bit I am going to say that's negative though is that it does drone on for a little too long - 6 minutes is an overly long song and you do get the feeling it could end much earlier than it does.

Solitude suffers no such problem though, and with the simple accompaniment is perhaps the easiest place to listen to the carefully chosen lyrics of the songs - themes of heartbreak clearly coming from some of the songs as Christopher Owens admits was a source of inspriation. Lust for Life is completely different from the other two I've had the opportunity to listen to - a bit crazier in terms of both lyrics, tune, and definitely video. All in all, it's what I'd best describe as a very "tempting" start - and one to listen to for the future.

Lust for Life is out on 7 Sept, with the debut album imaginatively entitled "Album" following on the 28th over here in Europe.

V2009: Preview

Next weekend is V then - and I'm please to report that, as last year, Hazard will be assisting as the "hub" for remote posting throughout the weekend (I still can't convince my phone to let me blog from the site); and I'll be giving a full report in due course thereafter (but not immediately, because I'll be going straight on my summer holidays)

Regular readers will know from my previous years at V that I don't know what I'm going to be doing until I get there, or (more importantly for this blog) where I'm going to be. I may be allocated to a stage or just in a general public enclosure. Either way, I'll be nearer one stage than any others, and won't have the complete flexibility as I did at Kendal Calling to go and explore another stage because there's a good band.

Thankfully, being V, there's a brilliant range of talent on all stages. So, it's more a case of "when do I want to arrange my lunch break not to miss if I'm in the area and hope not to get any patients at that time".

Even though it's from the 1957 film, Jailhouse Rock was the first ever single to enter the charts straight in at No1 on the 24th January 1958. No great surprise it ended up being the biggest seller of the year...

It's a nice and familiar top 5 though - sadly a really enjoyable release from the year ending up at No6. All together now, "There's Juice loose about this hoouse"

One EskimO - Givin' Up

I've already mentioned One EskimO once here, and I'm sure there's going to be plenty more mentions to come - with enough luck I'll go to watch them at V this year, there's a delayed album review to post just in time for the delayed album launch in September, and they're definitely turning to one of my favourite bands of the year - if slightly "underground" (in the sense as not mainstream yet, as opposed to a style of music). One track that isn't on the album though is Givin' Up - it was meant to be, but an internet leak got it "out there" in April of this year, and the Don Diablo mix was then made available as a free download in June. Like all remixes though, there's more than just the one - in fact I have 3 available as a free download here (together with the original for comparison purposes). I've never really understood remixes - and whilst the original is as good as it is, it's often a pointless exercise. Personally, I feel that the Zero T remix is a bit like something I'd find on a computer game... The original is dreamy and tuneful, with a powerful (whist not annoyingly loud) chorus. And, with this in mind, I really do actually like to Don Diablo remix. It's only a slight twist - more electonic (obviously) - maybe even a bit Muse-like, a bit of a faster feel to it. Just a bit more get up and go, but no so much to be unfaithful to the roots of the song. Anyway, have a listen, and shout out if you have further comments.

The Ting Tings: We Started Nothing

I've been sat on this album for far too long, and never got round to making a post about it - so, time to quickly put that right.

I suppose one reason it's taken me a while to get round to reviewing the album is that it also took me ages to actually buy the thing. The Ting Tings were a band who always had loads of good tracks, but very few were fantastic. OK, we all know That's not my name, but could be worried that the other singles of Great DJ, We Walk ... they're all a bit similar - shouty, and not with the greatest tune, but still good with an addictive quality.

Overall, the album is pretty much of the same - good, but nothing brilliant. Fruit Machine is pretty clever with its fast pace, and Traffic Light is very different from the feel of the rest of the album with a reggae feel. The recurring "loud" theme does make it an album that you can only listen to on loop if you're driving late at night, and some times it does just make it a bit too much. But, it's an unusual sound, and you'll hear very little like it - so when you're in the mood, it's perfect.

TOTW33: Arctic Monkeys - Crying Lightning

Quite a tricky one this week actually. Even the dreaded re-release (in this case, Wild Young Hearts by the Noisettes) has been regularly appearing in my mind and made it to the shortlist. Daniel Merriweather is continuing with his very soulful period, and Impossible has got that persistent funky accompaniment to add to the unique vocal sound.

At the end of the day though, it came between two. Twenty Two by Lily Allen is very distinctive, and with that predictable conflict between a bouncy tune and depressive lyrics. I'm just hoping that my life isn't already over at 24 either.

TOTW though, I've talked about before, and can't add much. It is clearly an evolution from the previous two albums - it's got the dischordant "wooziness" (as Fraser McAlpine defines it), and yet is still really powerful and dramatic.

Oh, and do you reckon that everyone barr Matt could seriously do with a trip to barbers?

TOTW32: Athlete - Superhuman Touch

I've go to blog about Muse's latest offering, even if I'm not going to make it TOTW yet. Coming soon is their latest album "The Resistance", and earlier this week I heard the lead single Uprising. To which all I can see is - brilliant.

OK, so more than one person has already told me it sounds like the theme to Doctor Who. And yes, it's very definitely Muse, and the anthemic chorus is maybe slightly too close to Knights of Cydonia. But so what - it's what makes the band. And we'll all be remembering it for ages to come. The single and album aren't out until September, and only one radio listen over the week will never make a TOTW - but watch this space.

TOTW though is from a band who've been fairly quiet recently, with a good catchy chorus which is all a song really needs to embed it into people's memories. Plus it's got them electronic twiddles - nice :)

Kendal Calling: Night 3

Much better night musically tonight, so well worth taking today off work to enjoy the activities.

I caught the end of Idlewild, with the sort of music that'll really get you going including A Modern Way of letting go - really enjoyable.

Then, I was in the pit for the final headliners Ash. I love being in the pit for two reasons - first of all if anything happens medically they land at your feet and you have no preparation time, it's a real rush. Secondly, it's the best view in the house. Scarily, being paired with young Carly, she had never heard of Ash, and only recognised a couple of the old favourites Shining Light and Goldfinger I think being the relevant two. However, they've also got some new-er songs around, like Twighlight of the Innocents, bringing a wide selection of songs. Which to an extent was actually unnecessary - the classic songs from the band's hey-day were sounding just as fresh as they did about 15 years ago. Good at getting the crowd going, really enjoyable.

Elsewhere, 3/4 of Mumford & Sons were late starting, so I wasn't able to hang around for more than the first part of the song which took a while to get going; Birds vs Planes Carly and myself were in mutual agreement that the music was fine and what we'd both like, but lead singer Jenny's voice was clearly on its way out; and somewhat disappointingly the Whisky Cats didn't really get going as I hoped, but that was possibly because of what was coming from the Keylied tent just round the corner.

Craig Charles on the decks playing the best of funk & soul got the crowd going incredibly as Sunday turned into Monday. Disco, funk, Motown, and best of all some Northern Soul (inevitably). When Frank Wilson started, I almost had to be physically restrained from joining in with the crowd - although I've got so say wearing boots in a muddy field isn't the greatest for the dancing...

Final thoughts then - Kendal Calling is still quite a small festival, but better for it. More intimate. From my own perspective, the music got better as the weekend went on, but to an extent that was the shifts I was working. It's been going from strength to strength since it's conception, and if the line-ups stay of a similar standard I'm very likely to be back next year. V2009 in just a few weeks will end up being a shock.

Kendal Calling : Night 2

So, with The Zutons headlining - who from the one or two songs I heard from walkabout were once again very good but I have been there before, so instead some other bands to touch upon, all of whom I think I've mentioned at some point in the past in this blog.

Frank Turner played to a packed out Keyleid Stage. The Ballad of Me & My Friends is one I've heard before, somewhere (I love these mysteries), and sounded just as good live as I hoped. Turner may have a potty mouth between the songs, but with some almost acoustic numbers (save for crowd participation) his talents as a his musician cannot be called into question.

Later, over on the We are Calling stage, Chewlips also packed 'em out - including me and some other Johnnies (well, it was raining). It was very bass heavy, as you can feel the beat through your abdomen. Throughout the set, I was thinking "I recognise this music" and "they sound very like that band that sung the song that goes ''We don't wanna wait there's no time, no time no ". That sung is obviously called Solo, and then there was the final number. Oh... Sorry, but the brain hasn't been properly functioning over the weekend!

It ended up being an intimate setting, and cracking singing from Tigs made it a really enjoyable and surprise set.

Another surprise was Casio Kids, who I often get tracks off to listen to but have never been overly enamoured with them. However, it's very apparent that they are a "Live band". A wide selection of instruments (including the famous cowbell) from the Norweigan group got the Keyleid stage going just after midnight. It was almost chill-out, but clear that the band were hard at work. Vendens storste land sounded particuarly great coming live. Maybe this served as the catalyst to get me properly interested in the guys.

I've got to add - all of these 3 groups had sell-out crowds, and none are "huge" names in the way that the Zutons are. Music awareness is growing round here, and well done to everyone who got away from the main stages to discover what else is on offer at the festival.

July last chance: Frankmusik

I was very tempted to go for Paloma Faith for last chance, but even though Confusion Girl has got some stick for not being as strong as some of Frankmusik's previous singles, and having a "look at my hot celebrity girlfriend" video, I still like it. It's classic pop, and reminds me of some other song with that chorus (from recent years) that I've not been able to put my finger on. Enjoyable music, that's all I ask!

Kendal Calling: Night 1

With what can only be described as predictable irony, as I set off to see the one band I quite fancied of the night (Fight Like Apes) we stumbled across a drugged-up punter, and by the time I'd sorted him out the "We are calling" stage had concluded for the night. So, musical highlights were fairly slim pickings I'm afraid.

Couple of bands worth a mention though - first of all Out from Animals. I knew from hearing them away from the tent that it was the sort of music that I like - very loud, drum heavy music that sounds absolutely brilliant live. Sometimes it then means that I don't like the studio edits, but having a quick listen to some of the other songs I'm pleased to report that's not the case. Potentially one to keep an eye on.

Then, after many of the stages (save for the dance tent, which was nothing sort of torture whilst subjected to that) had shut down I went to the Keylied (folk) stage. There was an excellent band on, which a crazy fiddle player and a lead singer who didn't sound that dissimilar to James Blunt, but only occasionally so it's not a bad thing for once. Butterfly was a good song, but I completely loved New York Trader. I recognised it somehow or from somewhere - maybe another folk festival I've been to this year, maybe an advert - but it was definitely memorable. Easy to sing along with, catchy, all great.

Unfortunately, looking at my timetable (which was much changed), it's not the band who were due on that stage at that time, so must have been the famous person "Special Guest". And no amount of googling has helped so far.

I will try harder tonight. Promise.

19th March 2008 was the date of my first post about Florence and the Machine. I was impressed by her crazed style, and clear musical ability.

Since then, I've mentioned her several times, the band has come had come 3rd in the BBC's "Sound of 2009" poll, and they're the winners of the 2009 Brit Awards critic choice award.

All of this (obviously the mentions on Musical Bites being the greatest accolades, erm...), without an album. It's taken until July 2009 to get there. But, when it was released, I've been looking forward to it for so much, not only did I jump at the idea of buying the album, I even bought the extended 2-CD special edition!

Thankfully, I wasn't in the slightest bit disappointed.

Starting with the soothing opening of Dog Days Are Over, itself crescending to a frantic peak, the mood of the album is set. All the tunes are slightly different - I'm not calling you a liar could be said to have a dance like tendency, Kiss with a fist is most definitely anything but - but there is there somehow a continuing theme. Somewhat crazy, unusual definitely, yet there's something else slightly indistinct that runs through the entire album.

Stand out track in my opinion is Girl with One Eye - a wonderfully acoustic number (at least to start with, but the drums kick in at the right moment exactly), soul-esque, and very powerful instrumentation. Cosmic Love also matches its title, with the sci-fi background music and the lyrics all gelling together to prove all were meant to go together. Harps are notoriously very difficult instruments to fit into pop music, and yet it seems to work not just in Cosmic Love but throughout the album as a whole.

With no weak tracks at all, it's clear that the build-up to the album has been time well spent; and the hype has been justified.

As I touched upon earlier, festival season is in full swing, and once again I'm doing the usual trick of turning-up, hopefully enjoying it, hopefully not being too busy and just suffering not drinking and potentially needing to run around a lot for the honour of getting in for free by doing it as a St Johnnie.

Of course, because I'm local it also means I get to do it slightly differently, by returning home to a nice, warm, bed instead of sticking on a cold, damp, muddy campsite.

I'm only there two nights ( :-( ) because of working on Monday morning, and I think two 8pm-8am shifts on Friday and Saturday is more than enough to destroy the bodyclock.

Hopefully, this means that I'll be able to most 'proper' posts (as opposed to dodgy text posts, if I get the thing working) with videos and photos as the weekend goes on.

So, what am I looking forward to?

Well, Friday night is comparatively quiet on the music front. I might be able to catch a bit of Goldie Lookin Chain - not really my sort of music, but good for a laugh. After that, if I've got freedom, it's a choice between The Streets (I've got their first album, would be great to hear some of their new material) or Fight Like Apes - and I think I'd probably prefer to wander over to the "We are Calling" stage to hear the lesser known group. I described them as 'crazed' previously, so they'll probably fit my criteria. After that the main stage dies down, so I'll just have to find some new talents on the Keylied Stage, or see if I'm likely to enjoy anything on the Traffic Stage.

Saturday into Sunday is a bit busier - although I'm slightly annoyed to probably be sleeping through Whiskey Cats and Red Light Company. If I wander in slightly earlier, hot on the scene Twisted Wheel will be worth a watch for sure, but I've seen headliners The Zutons too many times in the past 14 months to get really excited by the prospect of that. So, the question is if I'll head instead to watch Tommy Sparks or Frank Turner. Funky electronica or relaxing acoustic probably depends on my mood at the time.

Of course, I'll go wherever I'm bid, but I'm hopeful I'll see at least some of the above and whatever else I come across will be a worthwhile experience. Watch this space over the weekend for an example of a family-friendly, easy-going, positively rural festival.

UPDATE 30.07.09 18:35 - Temptation won the better of me, and with a spare holiday that needs using up before the end of August I'm now off on the Sunday night as well. It's another night shift to keep with the pattern, so sadly still missing Rumble Strips and probably Noah and the Whale. But, I should be in time for Idlewild, definitely on site (subject to running off in an Ambulance) for Ash, Craig Charles, Mumford and Sons, and I might just be able to watch the Whiskey Cats after all. Which is probably a good swap for a days hol.

Obviously, I'm not sure exactly how much I'll be sleeping over the weekend, but I will try and update when I can. Probably not from the site though due to limitation on moblogging (in that I can't).

Given the age of this rundown, I've been struggling with getting a top 5 together. There's also some conflict as to what the best selling song was of that year - the charts in those years not being as clear and regularised as they are today.

I'm going for Slim Whitman being the top seller, because until 1991, his solitary appearance in the charts held the record for the longest time at number 1 - 11 weeks with the song from the musical of the same name.

There's a definite country-bent though - and it's incredible to think that Bill Haley (the one everyone will recognise) was only at number 5.

Funky, soul, yet easy listening. I mentioned VV Brown in the Sound of 2009 post, but haven't since. Which is a bit of a surprise, given the praise I gave at the time. Thankfully, all good things return eventually, and Shark in the Water meets the criteria I said at the time. It's modern-enough to happily appear in the charts, whilst not being so full-on to not make the Coffin-Dodger Network's (aka Radio 2's) playlist. The opening may mislead some until the chorus, but the effect is great. More please!

TOTW28: La Roux - Bulletproof

Couple of thoughts for the week include Lady GaGa's Papparazzi and Paloma Faith's Stone Cold Sober; plus an honorable mention for the Arctic Monkeys.

Their brand spanking new album "Humbug" is out at the end of August, and Crying Lightning is already available for download as the first single before it's physical release just before the album. I've only heard it the once (well, twice, I'm playing that video as playing this), and haven't been immediately taken by it. Mind you, I'm confident I'm going to hear it a lot before it's proper release, so I'll reserve full judgement for a short while.

TOTW then is this little number:
Bulletproof is frantic, unusual, and with a distinctive and memorable chorus. The sort of song that goes just a well on the beach this summer (hey, I'm optimistic) as in a club or a trendy wine bar. And one that you can be singing for a while. Hall marks of a good pop song (as in popular music, not McFly!)

Unsung: ila'a'noiZe

Winston mentioned this band some time ago, but I'm still miles behind and have only just got listening to them.

ila'a'noiZe (say that when you've had a few) are, in many ways, a standard indie band. Guitar led, the local twang coming through the lyrcis (singing in an accent still being popular). They've got the standard 'slow number' (Neverland); the standard rockier one with a dance beat (OBS) - we've probably heard all the same before.

And that sounds derogatory. But, it's still a format that works. Just a hint of creativity to be subtly different, and providing it's well sung and well written - just like ila'a'noiZe - it's enjoyable club music. The acid test for this sort of music is if, at a dark and dingy venue, you'd find yourself toe-tapping or bouncing around like a crazed idiot or somewhere between the two (depending on your inhibitions). You may not want to buy an album, but they're just there to let you have a good night.

The test is passed. Therefore, have a listen, and see what you think.

TOTW27:Florence and the Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)

Last year I mentioned Florence and the Machine several times on this here blog, but there's been a significant absence recently. Although, to be fair, the last time 'Flo' had a single out was at the tail end of last year. Still, time to put that right.

The long, long awaited debut album (by me at least) "Lungs" is due out tomorrow; and the single to 'launch' it (out a few weeks now, Jun 22nd) Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) is exactly what I've come to love from the crazy group.

OK, so maybe the opening chords remind me of Depeche Mode (see what the harp does there, you'll see why) - but conflicting harps and angelic vocals with the bellowing "Raise it Up" probably hasn't happened in many years either.

I've seen Florence compared to Kate Bush over the past year and a bit, and I think this song is the most similar we've seen - very illustrious company to be compared to. There is no genre the song really fits in, and it's an amazing hybrid on its own.

Great to see her back, and next time I'm in town I'll be visiting HMV to pick up the album to complete the set.

June Last Chance: Bat for Lashes

I've been able to have quite a selection of tracks shortlisted last month - lots very good and potentially worthy of particular praise. The shorter-shortlist for last chance included Jarvis Cocker, with a particularly retro track; and Dan Black, who hasn't been mentioned for a while, and even though Symphonies does sound a bit like Umbrella -[ella - ella], it's slightly anthemic chorus and ambitious lyrics make it a definite hit.

But, after some thought, Bat for Lashes get the last chance. They've got a fairly unusual genre, that reminds of some early 90s bands - electronic, quasi-dance, but serene and calming. It's music that you can listen to, but you don't need to - it can happen in the background and embed into your subconcious. The latter fact probably explains why it wasn't a TOTW - it was never at the forefront of my conciousness; but with counter-melodies and beautiful singing, it was always worth it.

The one I'm choosing sounds like another Keane single, but pre their Perfect Symmetry album. Instead, it's by yet another come-back band. Foot of the mountain is a simple, well written pop song. Occasionally, you just need that in a song.

It's not as easy as I thought finding the 5 best selling singles of a given year. Even for a modern year like this, loads of the "Top 5" are just people's opinions. Still, I think that this is right.

What's clear from 2002 is that we're at the start of the reality talent show era. So, we have Gareth Gates crucifying a classic Jimmy Young song and Will Young at the top. Still, at least Will Young is now producing decent-ish records and showing talent. Whatever happened to Gates though? At least Elvis makes it!

TOTW24: Lionel Richie - Forever

A very strange selection for TOTW today.

There's logic behind it though - I've been listening to very little music this week. The exception was driving back to work on the Monday morning, when I was able to listen to Lionel Richie performing live on Radio 2.

How sad can you get, Lionel Richie.

However, as he performed All Night Long I was playing steering wheel bongos and singing out loud all the way along the M6 motorway. It's addictive. Thankfully, it's more than just me that thinks he's not all that bad to listen to - see also Akon who popped in to perform Just Go with the legend.

From the same album, Forever is a thoroughly enjoyable RnB song. So much so, that my flat mates did not recognise as it being by Lionel Rich Tea - which bodes well. It's entirely harmless, as well written as you'd expect from someone who's written so many memorable tunes, and distinctive.

Doesn't increase my "cred" by any means - but it's still worth it. No official video I'm afraid, but this'll do:

Miike Snow

I recently got an e-mail with this weird "viral" video.

The clips come from the dodgy "cult" 80s TV Show, 'Manimal'. Never heard of it either? It only ever made 8 episodes, I wouldn't worry about it, it's hardly CHiPs...

The music however comes from Miike Snow, who is definitely more of an American act than anyone who's made it over here in Blightly. The three guys who make up the group with their electronic pop are actually mainly Swedish, with only one yank in the line-up.

The tunes are very familiar, with melodies that remind me of One Republic amongst others (see Silvia to see if you agree with that one). But it's the accompaniment that makes the group stand out a bit from the crowd. Stand out track is Song for No One, even though with those opening cars I'm left thinking Vampire Weekend.

Personally, it doesn't stand out that much for me to be crawling with enthusiasm. But as decent background music for radio playlists, it's perfectly in the ball park. Worth a listen.

Medi & The Medicine

I'm no Londonner, but some of you certainly are - so it's time for a gig tip.

Tomorrow (That's Friday), hot new band (I've always wanted to say that) Medi & The Medicine are performing at the Raison d'etre show at Pigalle.

Pigalle being the appropriate place, because the band have made it big in Paris if not yet this side of La Manche. Given I'm a dedicated francophile, all the more reason to go. Time Out have also recommended the gig as a "Clubby session with a jazz/reggae/Afro-jazz/worldbeat feel".

But it's one band that's been tipped to me - and I am immediately impressed. There's a variety of sounds on their myspace, from the sooth acoustic Gone too far to the sing-along dance-crazy I know what you did, all are well written and easy on the ear.

Even though I can't be at Pigalle on Friday, there really is a reason to be (see what I did?) there...

Just a few days ago, I picked The Noisettes as my TOTW, and as a result featured their latest video.

For their next video, they're trying something different. Teaming up with Nokia and the launch of the Nokia 5800 Comes with Music on Orange, 50 fans of the band will film the video using said camera phones. The final result will be the video for Saturday Night.

If you want to be one the chosen few involved in making a music video (in a totally different style to "extras wanted to feature in a club scene"), then http://www.shotbyfans.com/ is the place to do it at. The filming will take place "somewhere" in London this coming Monday (15th June), and further details are also available on facebook.

Time for a top 5 again!

The biggest selling single is somewhat predictable - not forgetting it's B-Side of Revolution.

The No2 may be a bit more difficult to recall - but it's got a very memorable chorus to refresh your memories!

No5 is definitely a black spot though...

I was going to do a fairly detailed post this weekend on the two songs that have come to my attention - Jarvis Cocker's Angela and Never forget you by the Noisettes.

But, I'm a day late, and I'm still short on time, so it's not coming. So, here's a song by a band that does try to fill that Amy Winehouse shaped void.

Building on the gorillaz theme, here's another cartoon band. Indeed, the animation is created by Passion Pictures who also did the "original" cartoon band.

OK, chosen one sounds very James Blunt-esque, which loyal readers will know is far from a selling point. I even thought I'd be saying the same about kandi, but it developed into a decent and quite moving duet with some extremely familiar sounding vocals (the female being Candi Statton). In short, if you think gorillaz singing guitar based slow ballads, you're getting on the right track, if not quite totally there.

It's different, but good. And so it should be - produced by Rollo out of off of Faithless, it's got the unique trait that the 10 tracks in the album that was out on Monday ("All Balloons") form a story not just with the songs (which is quite rare in itself nowadays) but also with the videos. It's an animated musical perhaps, just without the complete absurdity of the average Disney cartoon.

The "real people" behind the project is a two piece - Kristan singing and Adam on drums (interview here). Their live performances - and I'm genuinely hoping to catch them at V this year - are a mix between the visuals and themselves, so they are clearly more than just a gimmicky cartoon and can genuinely play their instruments.

I think this album should start to make an impact. We'll certainly see.

After some discussion, I have a new theme for the alternate Wednesday post.

"The Music Year of the Week".

It's something different - but each fortnight I'll select a year (well, a random number generator will) between 1950 and 2010 (by the time it finishes).

The playlist that post will be the top 5 selling singles from that year.

Simple - and whilst there's millions upon millions of lists out there with "Top selling music" (not forgetting everyone's favourite Wikipedia), I've never gone through them all. I would have done it in turn, but that would have got boring with similar music together.

TOTW21: Daniel Merriweather - Red

Thanks to my work colleagues (trying to find out what song someone was on about took the rest of us a day) one song that's recently been going around my head is Rubber Lover by Marmaduke Duke. Sampling Billy Joel's Sleeping with the television on, people have said that it could be a surprise hit of the year, given it's short, punchy nature (less than 2 minutes long) and catchy tune. The flaw in this plan is that I've only heard about myself over the past week, and it was released over a month ago. Still, I can see why people like it.

I can't not mention The Killers World we Live in, nor the immensely bouncy and addictive She's got me dancing by Tommy Sparks with it's quasi-electronic beat, but here's the TOTW:

Daniel Merriweather - Red

Daniel Merriweather's Red - I've touched upon it before. Out on the 18th May, you all probably remember Merriweather from such Mark Ronson songs as Stop me if you've heard this one before, and whilst he does have a single career, this is the first song I've noticed as something that I really enjoy. It's a really powerful song, if distinctly dark and brooding. So, it's not a "get up and dance" number, but that doesn't suit all voices, and it's clear that this sort of song is what Merriweather excels at. With the proliferation of similar sounding male songsters at the minute, it's a bit surprising that I've not been talking about him for years in some way shape or form - we may even be fed up. But, whilst songs like this are released, there's no complaints here.
